TWO top-of-the-class Rugby pupils are on the fast track to Cambridge after receiving bursaries for their achievements.

Rugby High School students Atreyi Chakrabarty from Rugby and Jennifer Wilkins from Bulkington have been awarded funds towards their studies at the University of Cambridge by exam body OCR.

Having completed their A Levels, the students – along with seven others from across the West Midlands – were presented with their bursary awards on September 25 at OCR’s offices in Coventry.

The chosen few have received £3,000 for each year of their studies for living and tuition costs. OCR hopes the funds will help talented students in the region to make the most of their studies at Cambridge.

Atreyi Chakrabarty, who will be reading Natural Sciences at Cambridge said: “Receiving the OCR bursary has greatly reduced monetary burdens from my shoulders and will enable me to participate in a wider variety of activities and experiences than I could have otherwise. I am grateful to OCR and looking forward to my time at Cambridge and the many glorious things it has to offer.”

Budding medical student Jennifer Wilkins – who achieved A* grades in all four of her A levels – added: “I am so grateful to OCR for awarding me this bursary because not only will it help me directly during the first three years of my degree but will also take some of the financial pressure away during the final three. I have wanted to read medicine at Cambridge for many years and I am incredibly excited to begin studying for my degree.”

Liam Sammon, OCR’s Director of Education, congratulated the bursary winners and helped to present the awards.

He said: “We are once again thrilled by the rich pool of highly talented and conscientious students across the West Midlands. They are worthy winners of OCR bursaries not only because of their academic achievement and potential but because of their positive impact on others.”
