Bright sparky named Apprentice of the Year by housebuilder

A BRIGHT spark who works as an electrician on a Rugby building site has been named Apprentice of the Year by a developer.

Joe Moore, 21, joined William Davis Homes in August 2022 and is now in the final year of his training on site in Houlton.

He was awarded for his hard work on site, while also learning his trade in the classroom at Leicester College.

Joe was praised for his attitude, work ethic and willingness to learn at William Davis’ annual Apprentice of the Awards event at Burleigh Court in Loughborough.

Joe was presented with a trophy by Managing Director Guy Higgins. He also received £500 in prize money, which he plans to spend on tools.

Joe said: “After seeing electrical work being done on my house, I became interested in the trade and looked for work experience in it.

“My favourite part of the job is when we power up a house after second fix stage, when all the electrics are installed, and check that everything works – it’s always a great moment.

“I’m really enjoying learning the trade and it’s great to be named Apprentice of the Year.”

Now in its 54th year, William Davis’ apprenticeship programme has more than 30 apprentices on its books and each is paired with a mentor – many of whom are previous apprentices themselves.

Joe’s mentor Graham Farndon said: “Joe consistently puts in 100 per cent effort to everything he does – he’s always prepared, attentive and respectful. His dedication reflects the values instilled in him by his family, and he’s truly deserving of this award.”

Guy Higgins said: “Congratulations to Joe on his award win – he clearly enjoys his work as an electrician, he’s keen to learn and is committed to his development, which are all important qualities to achieve success.

“We look forward to seeing our apprentices continuing to progress in their development over the next year.”
