Brickwork students in Rugby lay foundations of future thanks to donation

STUDENTS in Rugby are laying the foundations of their future thanks to a generous donation worth more than £10,000.

Brickwork students at Rugby College have received a donation of 7,000 bricks from Ibstock, the UK’s leading brickmaker.

The brand new facing bricks will help the students perfect their bricklaying techniques.

The donation came about after brickwork lecturer Dan Burns ordered an Ibstock sample pack to give students an insight into the various products available.

He then reached out to Ibstock to organise a factory tour for the students and asked if the company would provide a donation to support their studies.

Dan said the donation was not only a fantastic asset for the college, but also gave students first-hand experience of project managing a large-scale delivery.

He said: “A lot of our students are very practically-minded, and they now have some excellent new bricks to develop their skills with.

“They got to experience project managing a delivery, including preparing for it by ordering a skip and clearing the site to make way for the stock, and then using their manual handling and communication skills as well as their health and safety knowledge when it arrived.

“The donation also demonstrated the importance of networking and building up strong industry contacts.

“We have some very promising young bricklayers currently studying at the college, and I’m sure the donation will only further their success going forward.”

Emily Landsborough of Ibstock Plc said: “The schools and colleges developing construction skills for the future are core to the long-term success of our industry. We hope we are making a small contribution to their development and pride in the work they are doing.”
