Back to the 80s for Rugby Theatre youth project

RUGBY Theatre is seeking talented youngsters to take part in its annual youth project giving children and young adults the chance to perform on stage over the summer holidays.

This year’s show is Back to the 80s, a musical with pop songs from the decade – plus copious amounts of blue eye shadow, a Star Wars dream sequence, 20 cans of hairspray and more.

“This is a great show for boys to shine as well as girls – it’s high energy and everyone will be involved from start to finish,” said the project’s director Phil Kettle.

“The songs are from major stars of then and now, such as Lionel Richie, Bonnie Tyler, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi and The Proclaimers, to name a few.

“As well as hard work, it’s going to be great fun.”

The youth project is open to budding actors, singers and dancers aged between ten and 21, with participants putting together a high-quality show after just ten days of intensive rehearsals, guided by a West End director, choreographer and musical director.

Now in its 24th year, Rugby Theatre’s youth project was set up to give young people access to theatre, and to help them develop skills they can take forward into their adult lives.

The youth project runs from July 23 to August 7, and interested youngsters are asked to submit a short audition video using the chorus from Kim Wilde’s ‘We’re the Kids in America.’ The deadline for video submissions is June 30, with a free session to help make videos at the theatre on June 24.

See the auditions page at www.rugbytheatre.co.uk for more, or contact Phil Kettle at [email protected] for links to audition music and choreography.
