All aboard for Christmas as town centre gets festive this weekend

ALL ABOARD for Christmas – a novelty train ride and a lantern procession in Rugby town centre will help the town get in the festive spirit this weekend.

Free Santa Express rides will run on Saturday and Sunday (December 13 and 14), departing from the top of Sheep Street.

A lantern procession led by a dancing Chinese dragon and a colourful samba band will leave St Andrew’s Church at 5.30pm on Saturday, taking a short circular route around the town centre, before returning to the church for hot chocolate and Christmas carols.

All are welcome to join the procession with their own lanterns, or to make one at a free lantern-making session at the church during the afternoon. Arrive at the church for 5.15pm at the latest to join the procession.

On Sunday from 11am to 5pm, Rugby’s first Christmas independent market takes place in Market Place, with stalls offering a range of Christmas gifts and festive treats accompanied by music, family entertainment and a visit from Father Christmas.

Linda Lowne, Rugby First Business Director, said: “This promises to be a really lovely event with the Santa Express, lantern procession, music and independent market.

“The lantern procession is really magical, and we would like as many families, individuals, businesses, communities or groups to join the procession, as well as support the independent market.

“The event is also a great opportunity for the whole community to come together and celebrate Christmas, as well as support their town centre by shopping locally.

“A special thank you as always to Rugby Borough Council, St Andrew’s Church, the Warwickshire Chinese Association and the Indian Community Association for their support of the event.”
