Winning draw keeps Rugby in the hunt for fourth spot

RUGBY have their sights firmly set on a fourth-place finish in the Warwickshire Premier League after coming away from Bablake Old Boys with a winning draw on Bank Holiday Monday.

After Saturday’s match away at Nuneaton was abandoned due to the wet weather, sunshine met both sides at Bablake and after winning the toss Rugby elected to bat first.

Openers Asaad Qureshi and Rishi Tank made a positive start, racing to 41 before the first wicket and when both were bowled out ten runs later the visitors could have been in trouble.

The score was pushed up to 105 before Terry Cooper was bowled out and then three quick wickets had Rugby struggling on 121 for 6.

But the introduction of Henry Wilkins saved Rugby as he top-scored with 69 and a useful knock of 21 not out by Alex Smith helped the visitors reach 209 for 9 from 50 overs.

Thomas Cowley was the pick of the bowlers for Rugby after picking up three wickets and conceding 37 ruins from his 12 overs, which included four maidens.

Bablake lost the early wicket of Clark McCallum with just five runs on the board as Bablake struggled with the bat early on but Joshua Manning’s knock of 71 not out helped the home side reach 160 for 5 from their 50 overs.
