PLEASE HELP: Birmingham Dogs Home need your 'suppawt' after influx of pandemic pooches

Rugby Editorial 13th Jul, 2022   0

Birmingham Dogs Home are in desperate need of support as they continue to receive an influx of pandemic puppies with life-threatening issues caused by irresponsible breeding and families facing economic pressures with the cost-of-living rising.

Between February and June 2022,  the charity received over 80 dogs every month resulting in the charity’s kennels now being at full capacity.

Areika Bickerton, Centre Manager at the charity’s rescue centre in Catherine-de-Barnes said:

“This is more than double the number we received in the same months in 2021.

“We have capacity for over 120 dogs here in Solihull and 90 more in our Wolverhampton centre and every kennel is full.

“Our canine carers are working hard to help every dog and to find new homes for them as quickly as possible, but we are stretched to our limits.”

The charity rely on kind donations, to help care for their furry residents and help them find new homes. But before they can go on to their forever homes, many furry residents often need vaccinating, medical treatment, training and all the usual costs associated with feeding and looking after mans best friends at the brilliant Birmingham Dogs Home centres in Solihull and Wolverhampton.

For 130 years Birmingham Dogs Home have been caring for our regions abandoned and mistreated dogs and as a charity they depend entirely on the support of the local community.

This support enables them to provide the best possible care for dogs from across the Midlands who may have been mistreated or had a rough start in life. Every penny received helps towards caring and finding happy homes for their special residents.

Or perhaps you would like to add to your family and adopt one of the Birmingham Dogs Home residents?

Karen Doy, Centre Manager at the charity added:

“We have noticed more dogs coming to us unvaccinated and un-neutered and more young mothers with puppies as a result.

“Our kennels are currently full and regrettably we can’t accommodate any more dogs until some of our current residents are adopted.

“We are appealing to local dog lovers to consider offering a second chance of happiness to these dogs who find themselves homeless through no fault of their own.”

Chief Executive Giles reflected:

“We find ourselves in an extraordinary situation for the dog rescue sector and Birmingham Dogs Home in particular.

This is our 130th birthday year and as we are marking this significant milestone of 130 years of caring, since we were founded in 1892, the current situation shows how vital the work of our charity still is today.  We will continue to support the Midlands community and be here for every dog that needs us for many years to come.”

If you can help, they would love your suppawt no matter how small (every pound is received very gratefully with a wagging tail)…

Here are a few of the furry residents currently looking for new homes:

Hi, my name is Edith. I am a sweet girl and love everyone I meet. I love having a fuss from my k9 carers. I enjoy my walkies and walk well on lead. I also like to chase after a ball and have a good run around. Click here for more information on Edith.

Hello, I’m Reggie. I am a typical Akita who loves to do my own thing. I enjoy pottering around sniffing everything in sight and eating lots of treats. I do like a light fuss when I am comfortable with you. I am looking for a home to call my own, with understanding owners who can help me further with training. Click here for more info on Reggie.

Hello I’m Milo, I am looking for an experienced, adult only home and I cannot live with other animals. I am muzzle trained for visits to the vet and for being groomed. I am a sweet boy once I am comfortable around you but I do have boundaries and can snap out at you when I’m being overly handled. My new owners will need to be experienced with nervous dogs. I walk well on my lead and loves treats, especially cheese. Click here for more information on Milo

My name is Tigger, I am a big strong boy! I haven’t had the best start in life and I have spent a lot of my time in kennels, this has reflected on my behaviour and I have shown signs of toy and food aggression so I will need an experienced owner who can help me continue working on this however I am such a quick learner and have been making big improvements.
