Creative young storytellers help to mark Percival Guildhouse centenary

CREATIVE young storytellers from Rugby have penned imaginative tales to help mark the centenary of The Percival Guildhouse.

Secondary school pupils from the town took part in a short story competition to help the adult education centre celebrate its 100th birthday.

Presented with a series of themes as options, the budding authors produced a series of 500-word stories.

Announcing the winners, Guildhouse Centenary Committee member Andy Roughton said: “We were delighted with the quality of the response, even if imaginations tended towards horror. Perhaps there was something about 100 years that brought ghosts to mind!”

Rugby High School pupil Adrija Ganguly was announced as the winner of the 12-14 category for her story A Mother’s Determination.

Supriya Banwait, also from Rugby High School, won the 15-18 years category with her story Eyes in the Window.

Runners up were Aadit Garg and Hang Zhong of Lawrence Sheriff School, Parnika Nataraja of Ashlawn School, and Shamil Mariya from Bilton School.

Rugby High School students Deepshika Gangadhari, Kenuli Wickramasekara and Sophia Myronova were all highly commended.

All of the stories will be compiled into an illustrated book which will be available from Hunt’s Bookshop later this year.

The main winners have also been invited to The Percival Guildhouse’s formal Centenary Celebration at Rugby School in September, when they will be presented with their prizes.
