BOWLERS from the Warwickshire Women’s Bowling Association have qualified for the Amy Rose Bowl national finals.

Warwickshire bowlers teamed up with players from Herefordshire at the regional event held at Nuneaton Bowling Club.

And the women came out on top, battling their way through six games, to take the regional title.

Warwickshire clinched the title with victory against former leaders Northamptonshire in their final match of the competition.

The games consisted of two sets of six ends in each game with seven sets played in singles matches.

The team contained five women players under the age of 24-years-old.

Warwickshire faced Leicestershire, Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire.

The national finals takes place in Leamington in August later this year.

Warwickshire Women also played Leicestershire in their first county game of the season in a friendly match at Narborough Bowling Club.

Warwickshire quartet Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield) with Vivienne Belt (Stratford), Ginny Burns (Warwick Boat Club) and Aleen Shuttleworth (Stoke) achieved the highest winning rink with a 17-12 victory in their contest.

And Debbie Bloxham with Elspeth Summers (both Stratford), Diane Medhurst (Avenue Coventry) and Celia Bellamy (Warwick Boat Club) claimed a dramatic 13-12 win in their match after staging a late comeback.

The remaining Warwickshire teams lost by narrow margins in their respective matches as the county suffered an 88-84 defeat to lose by four shots.

County president, Pat Gagg (Lillington), finished the day by presenting colt badges to Carol Bradley (Southam) and Lynn Stringer (Ambleside) and also a county badge to Ginny Burns (Warwick Boat Club).
