TREY Charles scored and was sent off as relegation-threatened Rugby Town suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Sporting Khalsa.

Charles kept Valley in the contest from the penalty spot after Andre Landell scored a quickfire brace at the start of the second period at Butlin Road.

However, Charles saw red in injury time after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.

The result means Rugby sit 20th in the Northern Premier League Midlands relegation zone, six points from safety.

Chances were at a premium in the first half as Sporting goalkeeper Brandon Ganley denied Jahvan Davidson-Miller.

And Charles went close on a couple of occasions as the first period ended goalless.

However, Khalsa broke the deadlock three minutes after the break when Landell headed in James McGrady’s cross.

And Landell doubled the away side’s lead on 55 minutes with a shot under Valley goalkeeper Paul Hathaway.

The home side responded on 69 minutes when Silvano Obeng drew a foul in the box and Charles converted from the penalty spot.

Hathaway then produced an excellent save from point-blank range to keep out McGrady’s effort.

Valley almost drew level late on only for Khalsa to clear Davidson-Miller’s backheel attempt off the line.

However, the game ended on a sour note for the home side as Charles picked up a pair of simultaneous yellow cards five minutes into injury time.

Rugby are next in action against Coleshill Town on Saturday, January 25 with kick-off at 3pm at Pack Meadow.
