AN ADVENTUROUS man from the Lutterworth area who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in February has helped to raise more than £13,000 for charity alongside his closest friends and family.
David Scott from Broughton Astley and a team of 56 friends, family members and supporters climbed all three Yorkshire peaks – Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough – in just one day to raise money for the MND Association, the Matt Hampson Foundation and the Leicester Organisation for the Relief Of Suffering Hospice (Loros).
In total, the team covered a distance of 24 miles with an ascent of more than 5,000 feet.
David is no stranger to adventure, having climbed Ben Nevis to help raise money for MND research. He also helps to raise awareness of MND by writing a blog about his personal experiences.
He said: “It was dark when we first set off at around 6am and 48 members of the team completed all three peaks, while five us completed two peaks only.
“I can honestly say this was a lot harder than completing Ben Nevis back in May of this year.
“There were some fantastic stories being told on the way around the walk and the support for myself from all family and friends was just amazing.
“There was also a massive feeling of people bonding with each other and the making of new friends they had only just met at the start of the walk. The team ranged in age from 17 to 61.
“The last of the team completed the walk around 7.15pm. We all met up later at our hotel and the atmosphere was just amazing.
“It was the hardest thing we’ve ever done but everyone is asking the next challenge will be!”
The MND Association’s Senior Regional Fundraiser Sharon King said: “We are all completely in awe of David and the amazing things he is doing to help raise awareness of motor neurone disease as well as vital funds.
“With friendship very much at the heart of everything he does, David continues to face his own diagnosis positively, using his determination and strength of spirit to support the Association and the work we do. We couldn’t be more grateful.”
