A BRIGHTER future is ahead for Marton, with streetlights in the village set to be replaced by energy-efficient LED alternatives.
Marton Parish Council has been awarded over £2,600 to replace the existing 70-watt bulbs in five streetlights on a main road through the village.
The money comes from Warwickshire County Council’s (WCC) £1million Green Shoots Community Climate Change Fund, which supports small, community-powered initiatives across the county to address the climate change emergency.
The Parish Council and street lighting technicians will replace the tops of existing lampposts, swapping out old inefficient lamps for LEDs – reducing waste and overall energy use.
The move will save 94,000 kWh of electricity per year – worth around £30,000 under current prices – and 52,500 kg of CO2 per year.
Marton Parish Council Chair Faye Chambers said: “We’ve been committed to replacing streetlights with more energy efficient LED bulbs for many years, but costs have made progress slow.
“The Green Shoots grant has been a huge help in supporting us to speed up our efforts to reduce the village’s environmental impact.”
WCC’s environment spokeswoman Coun Heather Timms said: “Marton Parish Council has been able to demonstrate considerable carbon and energy savings through the replacement of the bulbs in only five streetlights. To be able to deliver such savings with relatively low overheads of investment is very impressive.
“Streetlighting is one of the ways that we as a council have been able to reduce our carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Through initiatives like replacing old bulbs with LED equivalents, we have managed to dramatically reduce the amount of energy we use and the associated carbon costs.”
