School of Samba looking for new rhythmic recruits

BRAZILIAN rhythms are returning to Rugby as a samba teacher looks to revive Rugby’s longest established percussion group.

Russ Hinks is inviting Rugbeians to join the Rugby School of Samba – which he founded around 25 years ago.

Recently retired from teaching percussion at Ashlawn School, Russ wants to relaunch the band.

Russ, who has been teaching samba and kit drums for over 25 years and performed with samba bands all over the UK and Europe, said: “The essence of the samba school is a fun and friendly environment where people can learn percussion skills and play latin rhythms in a ‘batteria’, or samba drumming band.

“There will be plenty of performance possibilities for those that join, and we would like to introduce some dance and carnivalesque opportunities to the community.

“The course would culminate in a performance to the public, and I’m hopeful we can play at the Christmas lights switch on later this year.

“I can’t wait to see some new faces and play some energetic happy samba!”

The not-for-profit group’s free six-week taster course begins tomorrow (Thursday October 3) at St Peter’s Church Hall in St Peter’s Road, from 8-9.30pm. All over-15s are welcome and instruments are supplied.
