Quarry swimmers prompt renewed safety warning

THE DANGERS of swimming in open water have been reiterated by Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service after people were seen in the water at Newbold Quarry.

After receiving calls from concerned residents and passers-by, firefighters came across 12 people who were all warned they were risking their lives.

And Moreno Francioso of Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said two of them ignored the advice and carried on swimming.

He said: “Despite the warnings given, two of the young people we spoke to laughed off the advice and got back in the water. This is just unbelievable.

“I cannot stress enough the dangers that exist in swimming in open water. While reservoirs, lakes, rivers and other inland water may look safe and inviting, particularly on a hot day, there are hidden dangers below the surface that could make you ill, hurt you, and at worst, kill you.

“So please think twice before you get into deep water and not only put your life at risk, but also the lives of the firefighters or passers-by who go into the waters to try and rescue you.

“The last thing we want to do this summer is to have to explain to your parents that despite our best efforts, we just couldn’t save you.”

Warwickshire County Council’s community fire safety spokesman Coun Andy Crump said it was vital to know how to stay safe in and around water.

He said: “If you see someone in trouble in water, don’t enter the water yourself. Dial 999 and ask for the fire service.

“Remember, if you do fall in, don’t struggle, simply float or gently tread water. Being able to stay calm can be the difference between life and death.”
