Crick mum - one of Britain's top hammer throwers - hoping to compete on international stage

AN ATHLETE and working mum who is one of Britain’s top hammer throwers is asking for help so she can take what might be her last chance to compete on the international stage.

Lucy Marshall wants to win a medal at the European Masters Athletics Championships in Venice this September – but needs sponsorship and donations to compete in the self-funded event.

Already ranked as Britain’s number one and record-holder in the W35 Masters Weight Throw category, the Crick resident has thrived at the sport since taking it up in her teens.

But now the 37-year-old personal trainer – who works part-time so she can look after her two boys, one of whom has Autistic Spectrum Disorder and learning difficulties – wants to challenge herself in international competition.

Lucy says it can be difficult fitting in her training around work and childcare.

She said: “Trying to fit training in around work and my boys can be difficult at times but I do the best I can.

“It’s not easy but we cope and I’ve managed to achieve so much – and I feel there is still more I can achieve.

“I’ve never yet been able to attend the European or World Masters’ Championships, due mainly to dealing with childcare and the costs involved.”

She says this may be her last chance to attend, with her body suffering after years of training.

“I would really like to challenge myself and try and break my British records on an international stage. I believe I have a realistic chance of challenging for a medal in the Throws Pentathlon, Weight Throw and Hammer events.

“While I am able, I would love to give it a go and see what I can achieve.”

Lucy needs to raise £2,000 to pay for the required British kit, entrance fees, flights and accommodation – and has already raised over £700.
