Green-fingered Brownies breathe new life into school garden

NEW life has been breathed into a school garden by a local Brownie group.

Members of the 7th Rugby Brownies, who are part of Girlguiding Warwickshire’s Dunsmore District, have been working on The Avon Valley School’s garden and nature area – learning new skills in the process.

The Brownies, aged 7-10, have planted seeds for courgettes, pumpkins, dwarf and runner beans, and cucumbers. They have also weeded, watered the plants and collected stones from the soil.

Brownie leader and Avon Valley teaching assistant Rachel Vaughan said: “As far as the girls were concerned, they were doing this for the joy of growing their own produce, but they will be awarded a surprise gardener interest badge at the end of the term.”

Head teacher Alison Davies said: “It is always nice to see local community groups using our school facilities. The 7th Rugby Brownies have done a wonderful job in the school garden and I hope they are looking forward to sampling the fruits of their labour when they eat the vegetables that they have grown.”
