A VOLUNTEER couple have won an award for dedicating over 35 years to Rugby’s independent adult education centre.

Jo and Ted Major have won the Long Service Award in Rugby’s annual Volunteer Awards for their services to the Percival Guildhouse.

Both now in their 80s, Jo and Ted have taken on a variety of volunteer roles at the St Matthew’s Street centre, from organising volunteers, quizzes and fundraising events to running groups and co-odinating the hand-delivery of hundreds of Centre brochures each year.

They also stepped in when the charity-run institution could no longer afford a warden, doing handy work, making tea, washing up, helping in the office and devising new ways to raise funds.

Percival Guildhouse chair David Dove said: “We’re delighted for Jo and Ted.

“They epitomise the volunteer tradition which has ensured more than 90 years of adult education provision in the town. Volunteers form the backbone of this unique centre of education for adults of all ages.

“Jo and Ted have contributed to every aspect of Guildhouse life. They are an inspiration. This public recognition for all they have done is very well deserved.”

Manager Sarah Gall added: “Jo and Ted are passionate supporters and have been instrumental in making the Guildhouse the success it is today.

“Their enthusiasm is infectious, inspiring others – students and volunteers alike – to get involved.”

The Percival Guildhouse – the only independent adult education centre in Warwickshire – was founded in 1925 and is run by a charitable trust. It runs a variety of day and evening classes plus all-day courses. Visit www.percival-guildhouse.co.uk for more information.
