Conservatives retain control of Rugby Borough Council amid Brexit protest

THE CONSERVATIVES remain in control of Rugby Borough Council following yesterday’s local elections, with a majority of one.

There is no overall change in each party’s share of seats, with the Tories securing 23 of the 42 seats, and Labour and the Liberal Democrats on nine each.

Coun Lisa Parker, who was suspended by the Conservatives after her name was added to the ballot paper, will sit as an independent councillor.

Hundreds of ballot papers are said to have been spoiled in a Brexit protest.

A total of 14 of the council’s 42 seats were contested at this year’s election – a third of the total.
