THREE rush hour crashes in the space of 20 minutes meant traffic across Rugby was brought to a standstill on Monday.
Emergency services were called to Viaduct Close just before 8am after a crash between a car and a cyclist.
Ambulance crews arrived to find the cyclist – believed to be in his 50s – had been thrown over his handlebars after smashing into the car, which was stationary.
The man received treatment for a head injury and suspected fractured elbow and was then taken to University Hospital in Coventry.
Less than 15 minutes later, ambulance crews were sent to Newbold Road after a 15-year-old was hit by a car on his way to Avon Valley School.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, crews discovered the boy was fully conscious and alert.
“He was treated for a serious neck injury as well as cuts and bruises.
“He was immobilised, given pain relief and taken to University Hospital in Coventry.”
The boy’s parents were contacted by the school following the crash. The driver of the car – a woman – was uninjured.
And within a minute, emergency services – including the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance – were called to reports of a third crash between a car and a motorbike.
The motorcyclist – a man believed to be in his 50s – was lying at the junction of Brownsover Road and Leicester Road when crews arrived.
He was treated for injuries to his chest, pelvis, back and shoulder and given pain relief before being taken to hospital.
The spokesman added: “The combination of the three incidents led to significant traffic delays throughout Rugby that lasted most of the morning.”
