A WELL-respected member of Rugby’s West Indian community has died at the age of 78.
Hamlyn Hanoomansingh passed away in late January at Coventry’s Walsgrave Hospital.
Hamlyn was the Senior Community Relations officer for Rugby from 1982 until 1997, when he retired.
Born in Trinidad in May 1937, he lived in Rugby since 1982, with his wife Elsie of 56 years marriage.
Hamlyn was a school teacher in Trinidad for eight years before moving to the Bahamas where he served as a Police Officer for many years.
He migrated to the UK in 1971 to study Law. After studying at Lincoln’s Inn in London, he worked for Customs and Excise in Birmingham Airport and also carried out legal work in Coventry.
Hamlyn was a very keen card player and his favourite pastimes were playing poker and bridge with friends in Rugby. He was also involved in various community activities and was previously the Chairman of the Rugby West Indian Club.
He leaves wife Elsie, his two children Sharon and Dexter, and three grandchildren.
His daughter Sharon said: “My dear father will be sorely missed by his many relatives and friends in Trinidad, America, Canada, Bahamas, Rugby and other parts of the UK.”
Elsie added: “My family and I would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to all our many relatives and friends for their kind words, deeds and thoughts that they have rendered to us since the death of my dear husband.”
His funeral will be held at 12 noon on Friday February 26 at Rugby Baptist Church in Regent Place.
