FOOTBALL - Rugby Town beaten by play-off chasing Coleshill Town after early red card for goalkeeper

GOALKEEPER Charlie Woods saw red after just 20 minutes as 10-man Rugby Town suffered a 3-0 defeat away at play-off chasing Coleshill Town.

Woods’s dismissal proved costly with defender Josh Thomas forced to play in goal for the remaining 70 minutes at Pack Meadow.

The goalkeeper received a red card following a foul on Marvellous Onabirekhanlen just outside the penalty area.

And Daniel Gyasi scored the resulting free-kick but later saw a penalty saved by stand-in stopper Thomas.

However, further goals from former Town player Theo Rowe and Mason Rees condemned Valley to defeat.

And the result means Rugby sit 17th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, two points above the relegation zone.

The game exploded into life on 20 minutes when Onabirekhanlen beat Woods to a ball in-behind and the goalkeeper wiped out the home striker just outside the box.

The referee brandished a red card to Woods before Gyasi curled the resulting free-kick around the wall and into the bottom right corner of the goal from 20-yards out.

With no replacement goalkeeper on the bench, defender Thomas took the gloves with his first task to pick the ball up out of the net.

And Thomas then conceded a penalty four minutes into the second period following a coming together with Rowe in the box.

However, Thomas made amends for his error as he stuck out his left boot to keep out Gyasi’s penalty down the middle of the goal.

Coleshill eventually doubled their lead on 61 minutes when Rowe produced a clinical finish from close range after Callum Griffin lost possession deep inside his own half.

And Rees completed the scoring four minutes from time as he volleyed Dan Brookes’ cross from the right into the net after Thomas came and misjudged the flight of the ball.

Rugby are next in action against Belper Town on Tuesday, February 10 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Butlin Road.
